THE ECONOMY OF WASTE TO WEALTH: CREATIVE CONVERSION OF USELESSNESS TO USEFULNESS
Abstract
Nigeria as a Third World nation has been facing so much economic challenges. Currently, the nation is bedeviled by abject poverty and gross unemployment, which have compelled some members of the society to engage in illicit means of generating income. These mentioned
national problems could be alleviated through the practice of waste-to-art, but a good number of the society have no idea about the efficacy of this artistic practice in combating economic hardship. The objective of this paper is to create awareness concerning waste-to-art practice
among the teeming unemployed Nigerians, who could delve into the practice to mitigate their economic wants. To this end, this paper dwells upon expatiating on the possibilities of converting the seemingly useless waste materials into economically beneficial works of art. Through the examination of the practices of some waste-to-art practitioners, it was found out that the adventure of converting useless waste to valuable utilitarian wares is a laudable means
of income generation and could effectively make one self-reliant. So, the practical conversion of
useless waste materials into useful artistic objects is a nice strategy that would help in
checkmating to an extent, the level of unemployment and poverty in Nigeria, if many
unemployed Nigerians should adopt the practice.
